چکیده
Gills of the seawater fi sh Cat/w raps spixii (Agassiz, 1829) were submitted to routine processing for observation in scanning and transmission electron microscopy. The wrinkled surface of the gill filaments showed well-defined cellular ultrastructures. Microridges on cellular surface were projected over all gi ll structures, including respiratory lamellae. Chloride cells were usually at primary lamellae. Some rod let cells were fo und. Mucous secretory cells were uncommon at all parts of the gill arches. The pharyngeal region of the gill arches showed a lot oftaste buds but no spines. There were smal l and strong rakers. Such morphology is indicati ve of fishes that swallow small food but do not have filtering habits. At the ultrastructural level the gills of C. spixii presented the typical morphological pattern of Teleostei fishes.

Population Dynamics and Diet of the Madamango Sea Catfish Cathorops spixii (Agassiz, 1829) (Siluriformes: Ariidae) in a Tropical Bight in Southeastern Brazil
The madamango sea catfish, Cathorops spixii (Siluriformes: Ariidae), is often among the most abundant fishes on the South American Atlantic coast. In the present study, conducted in shallow, non-estuarine coastal areas of Caraguatatuba Bight in southeastern Brazil, collections of this species, the most abundant member of the ichthyofauna, included primarily medium-sized individuals, indicating ...

The seawater fish Oligoplites palometa (Cuvier,1833) is found in the American continent, from Guatemala to the coastline of São Paulo, Brazil. Below this area, it does not occur frequently. (MENEZES & FIGUEIREDO,1980). Scientific literature on its biology is scarce. However, studies have shown that this species presents lepidophagous habits. Lepidophagy is characteristic to some fishes that mus...
متن کاملCytogenetic analysis of three sea catfish species (Teleostei, Siluriformes, Ariidae) with the first report of Ag-NOR in this fish family
Despite their ecological and economical importance, fishes of the family Ariidae are still genetically and cytogenetically poorly studied. Among the 133 known species of ariids, only eight have been karyotyped. Cytogenetic analyses performed on Genidens barbus and Sciades herzbergii revealed that both species have 2n = 56 chromosomes and Cathorops aff. mapale has 2n = 52 chromosomes: Genidens b...
